Different missions address different uncertainties
Lunar exploration combines science, transport, communications, surface operations and human-flight preparation. An orbiter can map terrain or composition; a lander can investigate a particular site; a crew vehicle must meet additional safety and life-support requirements. These efforts can inform one another without sharing every objective.
Artemis I completed an uncrewed Orion flight around the Moon and splashed down on December 11, 2022. It tested integrated systems and return from lunar distance. It did not land astronauts on the surface, and its successful recovery did not by itself demonstrate every system required for a later landing.

Study robotic delivery through particular results
NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative purchases lunar delivery services for instruments. Blue Ghost Mission 1 landed on March 2, 2025 carrying NASA science and technology payloads. The landing established delivery to the surface; each instrument’s operation and scientific conclusions still require their own records.
Outcomes vary between missions. Peregrine suffered a propulsion problem after its January 2024 launch and could not attempt its planned lunar landing. NASA’s January 18 account explained the decision to end the mission by Earth reentry. Studying setbacks alongside successful deliveries prevents a program overview from becoming a list of only favorable examples.
Technicians in Bremen, Germany prepare the Orion European Service Module for shipment on November 1, 2018. The ground scene documents preparation of a European contribution to Orion. It is not a photograph of the module operating during Artemis I or evidence that every later lunar system was ready.

See what to notice
It documents visible ground work on the service module. Flight records and system measurements establish what that hardware later demonstrated in the integrated mission.

Connect capability without skipping steps
For a fictional sequence, an orbiter identifies candidate terrain, a robotic lander measures local conditions and a later proposal uses those findings to design an experiment. The measurements support planning, but do not guarantee the later vehicle’s readiness. Each transition needs its own evidence and review.
International lunar projects also have distinct goals, institutions and histories. Compare the questions being asked and the demonstrated results rather than treating every lunar spacecraft as a component of one national campaign. Keep schedules explicitly dated and distinguish an approved objective from a completed mission.
