Cosmic Origins Spectrograph
Hubble ultraviolet spectrograph
The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph is Hubble's high-throughput ultraviolet spectrograph, optimized for faint point sources such as distant quasars and tenuous intergalactic gas. Separate far- and near-ultraviolet channels cover about 900 to 3200 angstroms. Medium-resolution gratings operate near resolving power 20,000, while low-resolution modes operate near 3,000. COS minimizes reflective surfaces in the far-ultraviolet optical path to preserve sensitivity and uses photon-counting detectors suited to weak ultraviolet signals. Astronauts installed it during STS-125.
