Build a sequence of questions
The Chang’e program developed through lunar orbiters, landers and sample-return missions. Chang’e 1 and 2 observed from orbit before Chang'e 3 / Yutu delivered a lander and Yutu rover in 2013. The missions were related, but their measurement opportunities and engineering objectives were different.

A map changes where you can go
Orbital views reveal broad terrain and help place local observations in context. A surface instrument can examine a small area much more closely. The annotated Moon image locates the approximate Chang'e 3 / Yutu landing region; it is not a rover-eye photograph or a map proving every landing hazard was absent.
An annotated NASA image of the Moon marks the approximate Chang'e 3 / Yutu landing region. It is a location guide, not a surface image or a hazard map.
Look closely
Which questions need a closer view?
See what to notice
Individual slopes, rocks and sampling sites require higher-resolution or surface observations.

Choose the measurement scale
In a fictional proposal, a scientist wants both a regional map and the texture of one rock. One observation scale may not answer both questions. Connect the measurement to the platform: an orbiter for regional context, a lander or rover for nearby details, and a returned sample for laboratory work that exceeds onboard capabilities.
