Bring material to the instruments
Chang'e 5 returned lunar samples in December 2020. CNSA reported about 1,731 grams and transferred them to a dedicated laboratory for storage and research. An orbiter, lander, ascent vehicle and return capsule divided the transport tasks. Collecting material was only one step toward laboratory access.

A sample is also a history of handling
A fictional laboratory receives two grains: one with a recorded collection location and handling history, the other in an unlabeled bag. Both are material, but the first supports more defensible conclusions. Contamination control and documentation preserve the relationship between the grain, its environment and the measurement.

See what to notice
Collection documentation and laboratory measurements connect a transport achievement to scientific findings.

Preserve some questions for later
Earth laboratories can apply techniques that are difficult to fly and repeat measurements with new instruments. Keeping material and context available allows future work. The displayed return capsule and parachute document transportation hardware; the rocks’ composition or age must come from sample analysis, not the appearance of the capsule.
