A plot begins with paired records
To plot temperature against time, each temperature must remain attached to its timestamp. Sorting the temperatures alone destroys that pairing and can create a smooth-looking trend that never occurred. Work with complete records or a method that preserves their shared indexing.
A fictional dataset has time–value pairs (0, 3), (2, 7) and (5, 6), with time in hours and value in stated instrument units. The final value is 6 at hour 5. A plot with equally spaced row positions would hide that the time gaps are two and three hours.

Label the coordinate system
Plotting tools distinguish the overall figure from the axes that contain data. The labels, units, title and legend explain the mapping. A line joining samples can help the eye follow a sequence, but it should not imply additional observations between timestamps.
If a series includes a missing interval, represent it clearly or document any interpolation. For a fictional comparison of two instruments, convert compatible units and align the relevant times before drawing conclusions from overlapping lines. An attractive overlay does not by itself establish comparability.
This processed Shuttle Radar Topography Mission view records terrain in Bahia, Brazil, in February 2000. Its spatial structure provides context for gridded data. The display does not supply a complete numerical grid or its coordinate metadata.
Look closely
What would a program need before treating nearby displayed pixels as equally spaced ground samples?
See what to notice
The source grid, projection, pixel spacing and data-quality information establish the coordinates and valid values. Screen spacing by itself does not establish ground distance.

Keep the recipe with the result
A useful plotting recipe identifies the input file, selected columns, filters, unit conversions and display scales. Saving the figure alone loses decisions that may matter later. The code and data version make it possible to regenerate the same representation.
For a small exercise, manually verify one plotted point and one excluded record. Check whether axis limits hide important values and whether a logarithmic scale is suitable for the quantity. The goal is a figure that helps readers inspect the evidence, with the processing choices visible enough to challenge or reproduce.
