Lead with the measured result
For the fictional interval-C comparison, the target/reference ratio changed from 2 to 1.8. State the 10% decrease, the intervals and the valid-data rule before discussing possible causes. That order lets the reader distinguish the calculation from the interpretation built on it.
Include the sample count and the quantity’s units or dimensionless definition. A ratio can be dimensionless when numerator and denominator use compatible units, but it still needs a clear meaning. The term “brightness” alone may conceal different bands, calibrations or physical quantities.

State what the uncertainty covers
Imagine a fictional analysis reports a relative change of −10% with a defined interval from −14% to −6%. Under that method’s assumptions, the interval remains on the negative side. It does not include all possible calibration errors unless those were actually modeled.
A different fictional analysis gives an interval from −18% to +2%. That interval includes both a decrease and a small increase. It does not prove no change; it expresses a less conclusive result about the sign under the stated method. Explain the uncertainty definition instead of using a vague label such as “very reliable.”
Report the result in layers
Original teaching diagram. Fictional measurement. Ratio: 2 → 1.8. Relative change: −10%. Interpretive context. Define interval and data rule. State remaining alternatives. A numerical decrease is distinct from a demonstrated physical cause.

Separate the finding from the wider claim
The worked ratio change is not a real astronomical discovery. In an actual report, a measured dip alone would not establish its cause, a planet’s identity or a complete account of the system. State which alternatives were examined and which remain.
A useful conclusion also names the next evidence that would most improve the interpretation. That could be a better reference, a longer time series or an independent measurement under different conditions. Avoid both exaggeration and unnecessary dismissal: a carefully bounded result can be valuable even when it does not settle the whole question.
