Choose a question the observations can answer
“What is happening in space?” is a starting interest, not yet a . A more workable question identifies an object or population, a quantity, an interval and a comparison. For this course, use a fictional exercise: did a target’s measured brightness relative to a reference change between two observing intervals?
This asks about a measurable relationship without assuming its cause. A planet crossing a star, intrinsic variability and an instrumental effect are possible explanations in an appropriate astronomical setting, but the initial question should not silently treat any one of them as established.

Define the result in advance
Suppose the chosen statistic is the target signal divided by a suitable , compared between intervals. State how valid readings will be selected and how uncertainty will be evaluated. The reference must have a reason to be useful; merely calling something a reference does not prove it is stable or measured compatibly.
Write down what finding would challenge the initial idea. If both target and reference change in proportion, a target-only decrease is less persuasive. If only the target changes after documented quality checks, the investigation has a more specific pattern to explain, though the cause remains open.
STS-125 crew members inspect Hubble servicing equipment in Atlantis’s payload bay before launch in May 2009. The payload included Wide Field Camera 3 and other replacement hardware. Look closely
Does this ground inspection photograph demonstrate the precision of a later astronomical measurement?
See what to notice
It documents preparation. Calibration records, observations and analysis are needed to establish later measurement performance and any resulting scientific claim.

Bound the project
Choose an interval and data volume that can be inspected carefully. A small, well-documented exercise can teach more than a huge unexplained catalog query. Preserve the original question and distinguish later exploratory questions that arise from looking at the data.
Before beginning, describe a minimum useful report: the selected observations, the calculation, its uncertainty, competing explanations and a reproducible record. A result that does not support the expected change is still informative. The task is to investigate the question, not to manufacture a discovery that confirms the starting story.
