Read the later engineering review
A 2022 UNISEC-Global meeting report summarizes BIRDS principal investigator Mengu Cho’s review of the first generation. It describes weak continuous-wave signals with its UHF patch antenna and missing system-level communications testing after late antenna delivery. This later account qualifies the ambitious original experiment list. The report discusses BIRDS-1 collectively; it is not a detailed fault log assigning a unique failure mechanism to each spacecraft.
Keep generations distinct. The same review discusses electrical-power-system noise and a link-budget error for BIRDS-2. Those specific findings should not be copied onto Nigeria EduSat-1, which belonged to BIRDS-1. Similar names and adjacent slides are not enough to transfer a diagnosis. A useful investigation names the hardware generation, tested configuration, observed symptom and remaining uncertainty.

Test the complete path before it is inaccessible
Imagine planning a successor experiment. A radio tested alone on a bench can behave differently when connected to its flight antenna, wiring, power system and software. An end-to-end rehearsal sends a known command from representative ground equipment and verifies the expected spacecraft response and returned data. Testing more than one orientation and operating mode helps reveal conditions a single favorable setup misses.
For a fictional image test, the team stores a known 12,000-byte file, requests it through the intended radio path, reconstructs it from received packets and compares its content with the original. A reception indicator alone cannot substitute for the comparison. Record equipment settings, configuration and failures so someone else can repeat the test. This rehearsal cannot eliminate every space-environment risk, but it checks an essential mission dependency.

Protect the value of the next iteration
Five similar spacecraft provide more units, but they can share the same design weakness. If all use a poorly understood radio interface, copying that interface does not make its risk independent. A successor team can identify the common dependency, verify it early and allocate time for changes. The goal is a justified test plan, not a promise that adding satellites guarantees success.
The lasting educational product includes the explanation of what went wrong and how the next team can test the remedy. Preserve drawings, procedures, raw logs, decoded outputs and their versions. A later student should be able to distinguish a proposed improvement from one actually verified. This makes the flight experience useful without rewriting its limitations as completed science.
