Two directions of contamination
carries Earth-origin material to another world in ways that could compromise exploration or environments of concern. concerns material returned from another world and potential effects on Earth. The directions describe pathways, not proof that extraterrestrial life exists or that every returned rock is hazardous.
is a different field: detecting and assessing natural objects that could strike Earth and preparing possible responses. Both subjects involve responsible exploration and uncertainty, but cleaning a spacecraft and changing an asteroid’s trajectory address different problems. Their similar names should not collapse the distinction.

The destination and encounter matter
A flyby, an orbiter, a lander and a sample-return mission interact with a destination differently. Planetary protection categorization considers the target and encounter, including the scientific interest in life and the possibility of contaminating future investigations. A requirement suitable for one mission cannot simply be copied to every other destination.
A fictional icy-moon lander and a distant flyby therefore need separate evaluations. The lander contacts material directly; the flyby has a different planned interaction and must still assess unintended encounters. Mission-specific review connects the scientific concern to credible pathways, rather than assuming distance or a label settles everything.
Mars 2020 Perseverance hardware appears during ground preparation in March 2020. The assembly setting illustrates why controlled handling matters for planetary exploration. A photograph of protected hardware does not establish a microbial measurement, the mission’s complete contamination history or the fulfillment of every planetary-protection requirement.
Look closely
What would support a claim about the hardware’s contamination condition?
See what to notice
The applicable requirements, controlled handling history and relevant assay results supply evidence. Visible coverings and a clean-looking workspace cannot replace those records.

Cleanliness must be measured and maintained
Cleanrooms, controlled handling, microbial reduction and assays can form parts of a protection approach. Each method has limits: a test samples particular locations and detects organisms or signatures within its method’s scope. A clean-looking photograph is not a measurement of the entire spacecraft.
Cleaning also has to survive later assembly, transport and operation. A documented process records what was treated, how it was assessed and how recontamination was controlled. For returned material, the applicable containment and handling approach depends on its category; it is incorrect to assume every sample is handled identically or that destroying all samples is the universal requirement.
