Change the trajectory, then measure the change
A transfers momentum by striking an asteroid. NASA’s DART hit Dimorphos on September 26, 2022. Results reported in March 2023 found its orbit around Didymos shortened by about 33 minutes, with a reported uncertainty of about one minute. This was a controlled test on a system that did not threaten Earth.
The result was an orbital-period change around the larger asteroid, not a 33-minute delay in an Earth impact. Material ejected from the target contributed to the momentum response. Physical properties therefore matter when applying the demonstrated principle to another body.

Warning time and target properties shape options
A small velocity change applied well before an encounter can accumulate into a substantial position difference. A simple classroom model uses distance change equal to velocity change times elapsed time. Real deflection design must account for orbital dynamics, encounter geometry and uncertainty rather than extending a straight line indefinitely.
Other studied concepts include a , in which a nearby spacecraft’s gravitational attraction gradually alters an asteroid’s motion. Such concepts have different time, mass, control and development requirements. A method studied on paper should not be described as having the same demonstration history as DART.
DART sits inside the Falcon 9 payload fairing at Vandenberg Space Force Base on November 23, 2021, before launch. The photograph documents the launch preparation stage. The later Dimorphos impact and measured orbital-period change require separate encounter and follow-up evidence.
Look closely
Which evidence establishes that DART changed the moonlet’s orbit?
See what to notice
Measurements comparing Dimorphos’s orbital period before and after the impact establish the reported change. A prelaunch rocket photograph cannot demonstrate a later deflection result.

Response is broader than launching a spacecraft
An effective response begins with detection and characterization. Mission feasibility depends on how soon the object is understood, whether a spacecraft can reach it and whether the resulting trajectory change can be verified. Some scenarios may instead require civil-protection planning because a space intervention is not feasible in time.
Compare two fictional proposals: one names a dramatic technology, while another specifies the target properties, warning interval, reachable trajectory, expected change and follow-up measurements. The second is more assessable even before deciding whether it is feasible. is a chain of evidence and coordinated decisions, not a guarantee that one successful test solves every possible threat.
